I vaguely remember Growing Pains. I picked up this book because I have
been greatly encouraged by the ministry of Ray Comfort & Kirk Cameron. Their
books, tracts, training and public ministry have helped my family to share
our faith. I was delighted to see Kirk's 1st reactions to Ray's evangelism
method in this book. You can read about this yourself in Chapter 21. I know
that I had a similar thought pattern prior to getting my feet wet sharing
the Gospel the way they model it. And I too have had people ask me for more
tracts! Although, it hasn't always been "smooth sailing" as I have had at
least one person refuse a tract and others who have just walked away so it
was refreshing to see that Kirk shared his shortcomings in this book as he
first came to faith earlier on in his career.
While the book is not necessarily in strict chronological order, it is laid
out in such a way that you see a progression of Kirk's maturity. His
description of "life on the set" early on in the book gives one insight into
what it must be like in Hollywood; and from some of these little glimpses, I
find that my heart really goes out to those rare few in Hollywood who take a
moral stand and speak up for moral clarity and faith in our magnificent
Creator.
Those who enjoy a great romance, will also be delighted with the tale of
Kirk & Chelsea. Kirk describes well the true nature of marriage and I
appreciated "hearing" directly from Chelsea. You will also get a glimpse
into their hearts as parents of 6 of God's blessings in their lives, their
precious children. Learn also about their ongoing work with Camp Firefly and
their heart for families. What's more, it's a blessing to see a public
example of committed Christians living their faith in front of others,
regardless of how unpopular that may be; and regardless as to whether or not
sharing his faith comes across as "preachy," whatever that truly means. Like
Kirk, I am still growing, and I pray that he continues to grow boldly in his
faith, demonstrating and modeling for others the way to salvation.
This is a highly recommended read and a great gift book for any Growing
Pains fans you may know!
