Brian Flynn, Director of One Truth Ministries based in Minneapolis MN has long been a sought after authority on the New Age and the mystical practices that are entering the church. Brian has shared his testimony at conferences, churches and for various Christian groups around the country.

Loving Truth Books & Gifts Review

As stated in the subtitle, this book is part autobiography, part warning to the church.

A number of years ago, I was heavily involved in what has today become known as the emergent/ emerging or possibly even what is coming to be called the ancient future church movement and I was quite a "fan" of such leaders as Richard Foster and Dallas Willard. Particularly I was drawn to the "contemplative" aspects of the movement having "practiced" Lectio Divina and seeking after "experiential prayer." I, like many others, had a hunger for God, but sadly, was never quite directed toward my need for a Savior due to my sin. Instead of being lovingly called out of my sin by Christian believers, I was continuing to "embrace my brokenness" seeking after spirituality, which I readily found within the church; precisely the warning that Brian Flynn is giving to the church.

Brian’s background demonstrates to the reader that he certainly has a deep understanding into various aspects and influences of the New Age and its proponents. With the prevalence of New Age thought in our media (for more on this topic specifically I would refer the reader to Marcia Montenegro’s book, SpellBound) and our schools, it’s really no surprise that those same elements are entering easily into our churches. Even so, many Christians may find themselves surprised at the influence of the New Age. Because, as Brian Flynn states on page 89 “[t]he New Age is a rather complex subject combining Occultism, Hinduism, Buddhism, Humanism, Paganism and more,” he presents a clear and concise outline of the basic practices and beliefs of the more prominent practices and philosophies within the overall movement. He covers a wide range of topics and points out where they intersect, using direct quotes and providing the reader with a detailed biography so that they are able to investigate for themselves his claims. Some of the personalities discussed in this book include:

In the closing pages of the book, the author clearly demonstrates his passion for warning his brothers and sisters in Christ of the false doctrines that are being embraced within our churches when he writes “No matter how strong the winds of change may sweep through the church, God’s Word stands unchangeable.” I couldn’t agree more, and I would recommend to every believer that they test everything and hold onto the good, reading their Bibles daily and putting its commands into practice rather than seeking after spiritual experiences and practices as advocated within the New Age and, sadly, within many of our churches.
