See actual footage of the men and women of the US Coast Guard as they perform rescues at sea, on land, and in the air! Voyage out to sea on a Coast Guard Cutter; meet a USCG search and rescue dog; and watch USCG Rescue Swimmer training! Fly through the air with a crew of a Coast Guard rescue helicopter, and soar over the north Atlantic with the International Ice Patrol as they hunt for huge icebergs!
The BIG Rescue travels to different locations in order to expose and
educate children about the Coast Guard’s important responsibilities. The
video follows a cutter voyage off San Diego, California, meets a USCG
search and rescue dog, and observes USCG Rescue Swimmer Training. From
there, it’s off to Elizabeth City, North Carolina for a helicopter
rescue. The BIG Rescue ventures to St. Johns, Newfoundland, where a
Coast Guard C-130 and the International Ice Patrol embark on a mission
to plot the location of ice bergs in the North Atlantic. The video also
includes dramatic footage of real U.S. Coast Guard rescues, including
dramatic scenes from Hurricane Katrina rescues.

Have you ever wondered what the Coast Guard does? Find out in this Big
Adventure from Little Mammoth Media.
Start out in San Diego during a training mission on the US Coast Guard
Cutter Hamilton. You will see the busy Bridge crew in action and learn about
how a compass works. Then move below deck on this 172 crew member ship to
noisy the Engine room and watch how the team keeps the ship moving steadily.
See how well the team works together during an emergency fire drill. As the
crew returns to harbor from their training mission, see various ships and
the city skyline.
Next, travel across the country to Norfolk, VA and see how cadets are
trained to work with air crews to perform rescues at sea. You will even get
to see the largest helicopter in the Coast Guard, the HH 60-J Jayhawk and
learn some fascinating details about the helicopter.
Also in Norfolk, visit the Law Enforcement Training Center to see how crews
learn and practice enforcing Federal Laws. They show a routine safety
inspection as well as an exercise where the officers practice looking for
illegal drugs or weapons. You even get to see a Coast Guard dog in action!
Next, they show how crews practices= what to do in the event of a terrorist
attack and shows how they would board a boat of armed individuals.
Next go to Groton, CT to see the International Ice Patrol in action. The Ice
Patrol has:
Their job is to plot the location of icebergs so ships at sea can avoid a
collision. Brief mention of the Titanic tragedy and the loss of over 1500
people is briefly mentioned when a co-narrating child poses the question of
whether or not ships ever hit icebergs. You will see what types of studies
are made from satellites and during a scientific mission on board a C-130
plane.
Next see a new class of candidates attempting to become Coast Guard Rescue
Swimmers. See their very tough physical training required for this position.
Once you learn about the tough training, travel with a crew and rescue
swimmer for another training mission in Elizabeth City, NC using a Sikorsky
H-60 Jayhawk, the workhorse of the Coast Guard.
Finally, after seeing the various aspects of the USCG, actual rescue mission
footage is shown with along with commentary from Cost Guard members and nice
background music.
Not only is this DVD educational, but it is inspiring and makes our family
very grateful for the hard work, dedication and service of the USCG members
and their families.
