The Way of the Master

About the Authors

Ray Comfort

Ray Comfort's ministry has been commended by Franklin Graham, Ravi Zacharias, John MacArthur, David Jeremiah, Josh McDowell, Dr. Norman Geisler, Bill Gothard, David Wilkerson, Joni Eareckson Tada, and many other Christian leaders. He has written for Billy Graham's Decision magazine and Bill Bright's Worldwide Challenge.

His literature is used by the Moody Bible Institute, Leighton Ford Ministries, Campus Crusade For Christ, Institute in Basic Life Principles, and the Institute for Scientific & Biblical Research. He has also written more than 60 books and is a regular platform speaker at Southern Baptist State Conferences. His videos were seen by more than 30,000 pastors in 1992, and he has spoken in more than 700 churches, from almost every denomination.

In 1989, he was invited to leave his home country of New Zealand and become the Pastor of Evangelism with Hosanna Chapel in the city of Bellflower, in Southern California. The purpose of the invitation was simply to bring the Way of the Master teaching to the Church of the United States.

Ray lives with his wife Sue in Southern California, and they have three grown children, Jacob, Rachel and Daniel.

Kirk Cameron

Kirk Cameron is a television and film actor best known for his Golden Globe® nominated work on the TV series Growing Pains and for his role as journalist Buck Williams in the Left Behind feature films. Kirk produces and co-hosts The Way of the Master TV series, winner of the National Religious Broadcasters Best Program of the Year award, and produces and appears regularly on The Way of the Master radio show (www.wayofthemaster.com). He is married to Growing Pains and Left Behind co-star Chelsea Noble, with whom he has six children, and they live in Southern California. Together they run Camp Firefly (www.campfirely.com), a retreat for seriously ill children and their families.

We have great focus on "prayer life" today, but consider A.W. Tozer's quote (pg 8): "Have you noticed how much praying for revival has been going on of late - and how little revival has resulted? I believe the problem is that we have been trying to substitute praying for obeying, and it simply will not work."

Ray describes the problems we have in our churches today by such statistics as:

• "18% of abortion patients describe themselves as born-again or evangelical Christians" (pg. 11)
• "92% of Americans own a Bible but only 11% read it daily"
• "90% of Americans pray, but 87% do not believe in all of the Ten Commandments"
• "more Christian teens watch MTV (42%) than non-Christian (33%)", and out of Christian teens in Barna surveys "72% believed the Bible", but at the same time 66% have confessed having lied in the past 3 months to parent or teacher
• 55% have had sex out of marriage
• 20% have used illegal drugs or gotten drunk" (pg. 11-12)
• Evangelist Bill Fay has asked more than 15,000 churches about how many have shared their faith in the previous year - the answer: not one church has shown more than 10% of raised hands (pg.263).

There surely is something very wrong with the behaviors of self-professing Christians.

What do you hear when you listen to most popular teachers of our day? As Ray elaborates "Unless you are familiar with the 'whole counsel of God' (Acts 20:26-27), you may not even notice what's missing. Do they faithfully preach against sin? Do they preach righteousness and judgment (as Jesus did)? Do they speak about true repentance (not simply a 'change of mind'), and warn about the reality of Hell (as Jesus did)?" (pg.26) Listen to what John Wesley said: "The very first end of the Law [is], namely, convicting men of sin; awakening those who are still asleep on the brink of Hell... The ordinary method of God is to convict sinners by the Law, and that only. The gospel is not the means which hath ordained, or which our Lord himself used, for this end." (pg. 84)
